A glance back, and a look forward

Well 2010 is almost over so I thought I would have a look back over the year and see what I have learned, and what’s changed in my career.

This year has certainly been a mixed bag when it came to contracts. I’ve been scripting, animating, exporting, rigging and fixing things as well as modeling too. So almost all my skills have been exercised in the past 12 months.

Work

2010 began with a continuation of the contract I had with Ragdoll productions. This involved some intense scripting and rigging for their new show “Abney and Teal” which is due to air some time in 2011. This was a challenging project as I wasn`t rigging 3D objects, well not in the traditional way, so my head had to remain firmly fixed outside the box.

Once this contract finished things went quiet for a while, so I used this time to complete some smaller jobs, finish work on my new book, and create two tutorials for 3D Artist magazine.

Mid way through the year now and work ramped up again, and now I was animating like a demon, as well as fixing broken animations handed to the client from the previous developers who had gone under.

Coming to the end of the year and a chance meeting on Twitter lead to an in person meeting at a local developer, (see Twitter is good for something ;) ) So now I am ploughing away on a cool project which at present is mostly modeling based, with some rigging thrown in for good measure.

Personal

As far as my own projects go, this year seems to have been taken up completely by the new book, which left little time for anything other than Rocket Girl.

I did attempt to start work on a Frankenstein character, but this never really got off the ground and he was starting to look like something we see on everyone else’s ZBrush showreel.

I hope to change things next year and focus my spare time modeling on something different. I want to develop a style, and have fun doing it but rest assured there won`t be any exaggerated female pin ups, wrinkly old men or fierce monsters involved…well, unless requested by a client. I hope to do something approaching unique.

So watch this space for updates…

Oh, one more thing….

Merry Christmas and a wish you all the best for the new year!
